Question 1

WHAT IS A TREE PRESERVATION ORDER (TPO)?

Accepted Answer

A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is a legal protection placed on specific trees or woodlands by the local authority. It helps protect trees that provide significant public amenity value. If a tree is protected by a TPO, permission is usually required before carrying out pruning, felling or other works.

Question 2

CAN I PRUNE OR REMOVE A TREE WITH A TPO?

Accepted Answer

In many cases, yes, but approval from the local authority is typically required before work can begin. Each application is assessed individually, and permission may be granted where there are valid reasons such as safety concerns, tree health issues or property damage. We can advise on the most appropriate course of action and assist with the application process.

Question 3

WHAT IS A CONSERVATION AREA?

Accepted Answer

A Conservation Area is a designated location recognised for its special architectural, historical or environmental importance. Trees within Conservation Areas are often protected, meaning you may need to notify the local authority before carrying out certain types of tree work, even if a Tree Preservation Order is not in place.

Question 4

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF MY TREE IS PROTECTED?

Accepted Answer

The easiest way is to contact your local authority or speak with a qualified arborist. Hartford Tree Care can help determine whether your tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order or located within a Conservation Area and advise on any permissions that may be required.
